The site occupies the corner plot of a cul-de-sac, which was originally developed in the mid 20th-century and is made up of primarily detached three or four bedroom family homes. The original plots are generous, this plot in particular revealing itself to be oversized, with a large area of neglected garden along its boundary with the street.
The house is designed in a style typical of the cul-de-sac and the period, set back from the street with a shallow pitched roof and constructed with robust, simple materials. Green window frames and rainwater goods anchor the building in its leafy setting. Sand-coloured brickwork sits on a plinth of architectural masonry, forming a level datum for window cills above the gently sloping site.
The neighbouring property currently sits alone in the streetscape, making the new house an infill project of sorts, mirroring the scale of its neighbour and enhancing the street frontage. A recessed front door and subtle articulation of the building’s openings set the house apart from its neighbours. Carefully chosen materials showcase the building’s modernity, whilst the silhouette could have been there all along.
