A kiosk on the promenade in the Clifftop Conservation Area, Margate. Commissioned by Thanet Council and to be constructed by specialist contractor Betongpark Ltd to sit alongside their proposed new skatepark and landscaped public space.
The project will be Betongpark’s first building. Playing to their strengths, a bespoke construction method will be used, whereby the building is to be made from the outside-in; concrete external walls will be sprayed in-situ, and the building will be insulated and lined in timber. A simple monopitched roof with exposed rafters projects above, growing up and outwards from the robust primary structure and providing shelter for the servery.
The proposed building is designed to withstand harsh weather in its exposed coastal setting. Concrete will be hand-finished to varying degrees of smoothness, according to its orientation and how it catches the sunlight. A deep cantilevering eaves creates a distinct architectural gesture towards the ocean, and a round window in the rear elevation frames the sea view, a bit like a porthole in one of the many ships visible along the horizon.
Material from the abandoned mini-golf course currently occupying the site have been suggested to be recycled or left in-situ where opportunities allow, creating playful moments of re-use and memory across the site.
Details have been submitted for planning approval.
