House in a Garden
A new-build four-bedroom detached dwelling set within the curtliage of an existing 1930’s house in the village of Kings Worthy, Hampshire.
The site occupies the corner plot of a cul-de-sac, which was originally developed in the mid-century and is made up of primarily detached three or four bedroom family homes. The original plots are generous, and throughout the occupation of each house have revealed themselves to be perhaps oversized, as many now have large underloved areas or have already been developed. The neighbouring property currently sits alone in the streetscape, making the new house an infill project of sorts, mirroring the scale of the neighbour and enhancing the street frontage.
The house is designed in a style typical of the cul-de-sac and the period, set back from the street with a shallow pitched roof and constructed with robust, simple materials. A recessed front door and subtle articulation of the building’s openings set the house apart from its neighbours - materials showcase the building’s modernity, whilst the silhouette could have been there all along.
