The project comprises a rear extension with both structural and spatial challenges to address - the house has been a family home for 15 years and the client had noticed gradual signs that an intervention would be necessary; the building required additional support due to signs of subsidence in the outrigger, and the family required a dining space to accommodate their three adult children and their partners for meal times and board games during university holidays. Solid foundations and a table for eight were of equal importance in the brief.
A new ‘goal-post’ frame forming a rear extension has been proposed to resolve both issues - the additional structure will support the load of the house and create an open plan, naturally lit space for the family to gather. The kitchen has been moved to the rear of the house with a view over the garden, and the space occupied by the existing kitchen has been opened up around a new courtyard, allowing the original house to remain naturally daylit and ventilated, and protecting the daylight to the neighbour’s kitchen window.
